Exit slips are students’ written responses to questions the teacher asks at the end of a class session or end of a lesson. These are quick and informal, allowing the teacher to quickly assess students’ understanding of the material. This strategy can be very beneficial when dealing with art history, eras, and introducing a new lesson to students. Most importantly, it allows students to reflect and recall key terms, artists, elements, or media.
How to use: At the end of a lesson or class, ask students to respond to a question. Questions could be: 1. One thing I learned today is.... 2. One thing I am not sure about today's lesson is.... 3. I can use this knowledge or process again when I.... You may want to distribute or have the students supply 3x5 note cards to write their responses. Once the students have completed their exit slips, collect them as a part of an assessment portfolio for each student. Review the exit slips to determine how you may need to alter your instruction in order to maximize learning.
